The Karate Kid (1984)

There are films that add lines to our lexicon that become famous and “The Karate Kid” is one of them. The expression “wax on, wax off” has come to symbolize the boring, hard work that must be put in to become really good at something and is the lesson taught to a new-in-town teen, Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) by Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita.) Daniel is being bullied at school and after an unplanned intervention by karate master Mr. Miyagi, young Daniel decides he wants to learn the martial arts. He soon learns that learning defense is not about offense, and that the martial arts are about both mind and body. This film became a runaway hit with kids of all ages, had them lining up at the dojos for karate lessons, and garnered Morita an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
